Continuing Education for Managers

Continuing education has become essential in today’s property management industry. As the multifamily housing field rapidly evolves — from legal changes and technological innovation, to rising expectations from boards and residents alike — staying current is no longer optional: it’s a professional imperative.

Across the country, continuing education (CE) requirements vary. Some states (like Florida) mandate licensing and ongoing coursework, while others rely on professional organizations to set the standard. Widely recognized credentials like CMCA, AMS, and PCAM must be maintained through CE credits, reinforcing the idea that professional development is an ongoing commitment rather than a one-time achievement.

Doug Weinstein, SVP of Building Operations for AKAM Southeast, emphasizes that the pace of technological change alone makes continuing education indispensable. “Our industry continues to be increasingly technologically driven. We’re utilizing different types of building systems that were unheard of just a few years ago, and managers must keep up with the times. Continuing education provides the framework to do just that.”

Weinstein’s observation reflects a broader industry reality: that managers must continually adapt to new tools and expectations.

“Another important consideration is giving continuing education to the boards. It’s a two-prong approach. An educated board is a better client — so we [AKAM] do webinars for board members too.”

When boards understand governance, compliance, and operational best practices, they become stronger partners, leading to more effective community management overall.

Ultimately, continuing education strengthens the entire ecosystem of community associations. It sharpens managerial expertise, enhances credibility, fosters informed leadership, and helps ensure that communities are managed with professionalism in an increasingly complex environment.
