Experts emphasize the importance of transparency, setting clear expectations, and involving the community in discussions, especially when making decisions that affect residents. Regular updates, clear explanations of rules and fees, and open forums for feedback are crucial to maintaining trust and cooperation within the community.​

According to Jaime Sikorski, Senior Vice President at AKAM Northeast, making sure everyone is in alignment with shared goals is imperative to board success.

“The most successful communication stories center around the goals for the co-op or condo, whether improving quality of life or reducing costs. It’s looking at the overarching goals and explaining how the decisions or actions fit into those goals.” 

When communication breaks down, the consequences can be far-reaching. Misinformation can spread, leading to confusion and mistrust among residents. Legal issues may arise if residents feel their concerns are not addressed or if decisions are made without proper notice and discussion. Additionally, the lack of effective communication can result in decreased resident engagement and satisfaction, potentially affecting property values and the overall functioning of the building.​

To prevent these issues, it’s vital for boards and management to establish and maintain clear communication channels. This includes regular meetings, transparent dissemination of information, and active solicitation of resident feedback.
